I absolutely love holiday gift kits. They’re how I get a lot of my new makeup to try, and really they’re just so much fun! Also, when you have as much makeup as I do, minis tend to feel a lot more reasonable than the full size.
Today, I wanted to check out the Sephora Favorites kits that get released every year & compare their retail vs. “value” price and see if the numbers are close! Please know that this is not a review of the actual products; simply a test to see if the value provided actually matches what’s in the kit.
*Please note that the values provided below are estimates and some errors may be present.
Retail Price: $48.00
Calculated Value: $151.86
- *Huda Beauty Lashes – $20
- *IT Cosmetics – $24
- Yves Saint Laurent – $8.78
- MILK Makeup – $7.20
- Tarte – $6.58
- Marc Jacobs – $14.45
- Sephora Collection – $5.60
- Too Faced – $11.82
- Nars – $9.68
- Pat McGrath – $18.75
- *Benefit Cosmetics – $25
Is it Worth It? If you like the full sized products (marked with a star), I’d say this is absolutely worth purchasing! The value without them is $82.86, so if you have a strong dislike to any of them, just know that the value is much lower without including them. Still, this looks like a great way to test out a bunch of different mascaras, and since you need to replace them every 3-6 months the mini sizes makes it easier to use up rather than throw out!
Retail Price: $39.00
Calculated Value: $95.65
- Artist Couture Highlighter – $10.71
- *Kaja Beauty Blush – $24
- *Melt Cosmetics Lipstick – $19
- *Natasha Denona Highlight Duo – $19
- Violet Voss Glitter Topper – $9.38
- Farsali Serum – $9
- MILK Makeup Cooling Water – $4.56
Is It Worth It? Sephora was right on the money when they put an estimated value in there! Once again, the full size items are big indicators of if this is worth purchasing or not, so if the colors don’t appeal to you or you’re not interested, beware when purchasing! This is something that I actually picked up for myself!
Retail Price: $75.00
Calculated Value: $149.82
- *Charlotte Tilbury Lipstick – $34
- *IT Cosmetics Brow Pencil – $24
- *Beauty Blender – $15
- Hourglass Mascara – $10.82
- Too Faced Powder – $3.30
- Youth To The People Cleanser – $4.50
- Sunday Riley Oil – $15
- Dr. Dennis Gross Peel – $2.93 (Based on only one peel shown in kit)
- Sol de Janiero Bum Bum Cream – $4.75
- HUM Nutrition Vitamins – $2.50
- Ouai Hair Spray – $12
- Living Proof Dry Shampoo – $14
- NEST Fragrance Candle – $7.02
Is It Worth It? This one has me wondering a little more if it’s worth the price! There are some pretty high ticket items in here like the Charlotte Tilbury lipstick & the IT Cosmetics brow pencil; but if those colors don’t work for you or if you already own them, the value drops dramatically. While you’re still technically getting your money’s worth ($91.82), if you look at the hair products, they’re another large portion of the value, plus the Beauty Blender powder puff & the Sunday Riley oil. So if you don’t have use for any of those items, you’re now dropping to the price you paid or lower.
Retail Price: $15.00
Calculated Value: $10.03
- Cover FX Primer – $6.35
- Tarte Setting Spray – $2.38
- Laura Mercier Glow Powder – $1.30
Is It Worth It? This is not worth purchasing, as cute as it is! Unless you really want to try some of these products and really want to have a small size, I’d suggest waiting for a better value; chances are these will pop up as 100 point perks!
Retail Price: $15.00
Calculated Value: $28.95
- Make Up For Ever Shadow – $4.76
- Tarte Chrome Paint – $7.33
- Bobbi Brown Shadow Stick – $16.86
Is it Worth It? The value comes from the very high priced Bobbi Brown shadow stick; if this is a product that you’ve been wanting to try, I’d say go for it considering you’re getting the other two products essentially for free! The value of this is much better than the previous ornament. I would actually pick this one up if I didn’t already own the MUFE eye shadow!
Retail Price: $15.00
Calculated Value: $17.47
- Anastasia Lip Gloss – $7.12
- Tarte Lip Gloss – $4.75
- Nudestix Lip Gloss – $5.60
Is It Worth It? This one is a pretty close call! I’d say if you see those lip colors and decide you have to have them, it’s worth picking up, especially because while it’s not a great value, you’re at least getting your money’s worth. If you own any of these colors or don’t like any specific formula, I’d say skip this and go with something else. I might pick this one up because I’m curious to try those colors!
That’s everything that I’ll be checking out this week, but if you really like this idea let me know! I’m hoping to look at some other Sephora favorites, some Ulta kits, and brand specific gift sets!
What have you picked up for the holidays?
