Huda Beauty Matte Liquid Lipstick “Trendsetter” | Review

Hello friends!

I’ve owned the Huda Beauty liquid lips for a while now, but for some reason I’ve never actually made it a point to test them.  I’ve heard a lot of good things, so I figured it was finally time for me to share my own thoughts!

Color: The color I’m testing today is Trendsetter!  Sephora describes it as a “stylish brown nude”, which is almost spot on.  I think that calling it a brown makes it sound somewhat intimidating, and it’s more of a neutral midtone nude. It’s darker and more neutral than what some people may consider a “nude”, but I personally don’t think it’s what people traditionally think of as brown.  It’s all in your own preferences!

Packaging: I really enjoy the way that the packaging looks!  It’s a beautiful frosted glass with the Huda Beauty logo on the side and a black cap.  Unfortunately you can see that my packaging is a little off, and my cap doesn’t sit like it should.

Applicator: The applicator is a very standard doefoot that I think works very well with the formula!

Application: Like a lot of traditional liquid lipsticks that dry matte, this formula is very thin.  It glides on very easily and is completely opaque in one coat; I didn’t have to dip back into the tube at all because of the thinness and ease of spreading.

Comfort: I was shocked while I wore this, because it was incredibly comfortable!  Because of the thin liquid formula, I expected this to be drying and long-wearing just like the other products with a similar formula, but I didn’t feel like I needed to take this off at any point because of it being uncomfortable.

I would say that the good comparison of comfort with this product is any liquid lip with a moussey and thick formula, which is the exact opposite of this!  So if you’re someone who doesn’t like a mousse formula and doesn’t want to have something drying, I think you’ll find that the Huda Beauty formula will be perfect for your needs!

Fading: Unfortunately, I’ve found that you’re always trading comfort for lasting power, and this is no exception.  This product tends to fade rather quickly after eating a meal or just going throughout the day. While it will last longer than a traditional cream lipstick, you’ll still need to make touchups and can’t rely on it to stay around through everything.

I also noticed that it doesn’t seem to fade particularly well.  It comes off the center of the lips pretty easily and leaves a dark ring of color around the edges, which doesn’t look cute at all.  If it wears naturally without a meal, it still ends up looking kind of patchy.  I’m not sure if that’s because of the color or not, but that just means that if you plan on eating you should also plan on bringing this along for touch ups.

Transfer: Despite the fact that there was so much fading, I didn’t notice a lot of transfer.  When drinking my coffee, I didn’t see a lot of lipstick left behind on the mug.  I didn’t see it coming off on my food either, so I’m not really sure where it went!  I just know it didn’t say on my lips.

Final Thoughts: This is really a pretty good lipstick formula!  It provides the ease of application and matte finish from a traditional matte liquid lip, while still having the comfort of a moussey liquid lip.

The fading is the worst part of the formula, but since it’s something that can be fixed easily and really isn’t too bad, I wouldn’t let that hold you back from purchasing this unless it’s a necessity that your lipstick stay put the entire day because you can’t touch it up.

I think the value from this formula comes from what you’re looking for; it’s $20 for each tube, which isn’t the most expensive, but it’s certainly not drugstore either. If you like your other matte liquid lips or moussey lips, I don’t think this is necessary.  However, if you’re looking for an in between, this is a wonderful option.

The Huda Beauty liquid lipstick can be purchased on Sephora and the Huda Beauty website!

Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip “Creeper” | Review

Hello friends!

Colourpop took the world by storm a few years ago when they released their super shock shadows & ultra matte lips at an incredibly affordable price.  Another thing Colourpop is known for?  Limited edition!  So many colors that I’ve purchased have been discontinued.

One color that is still around though is Creeper, which is one of the original colors they released when they first started!

Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip "Creeper" | Review - A Midwest Belle

Color: Creeper is a bright, blue-based red.  It has a definite pink appearance, and when the product transferred it left behind a pink stain.

Packaging: Colourpop’s packaging is notoriously bad; the writing on the tubes rubs off incredibly easily.  Other than that, it’s a nice, very standard silver cap and clear tube that looks functional and basic!  I own the sample size of this color, but packaging is identical between this and the full size; just smaller.

Applicator: The applicator is also an incredibly basic doefoot shape.  Nothing too interesting to report there!

Application: I found that applying this product was both easy and a little more difficult.  The basic doefoot shape made it easy to use, but it didn’t pick up much product and was surprisingly dry (not the formula, the doefoot specifically!).

I was able to get my bottom lip in one swipe but I needed to go back into the tube a few times to get product onto the wand for the top lip.  It was also difficult doing it in that order because all the product would be on the tip of the wand and so I’d have to wipe it off or risk getting a weird clump of product on my cupid’s bow.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick “Bittersweet” | Review

Hello friends!

I just finished trying out Ashton, and so I was excited to give Bittersweet a go!  If you read my previous post, you know that I had an awesome experience with Ashton and will definitely be keeping it around and wearing it.  Today, I have an in depth review of my thoughts regarding this specific color.

Color: Bittersweet is described as a “brown plum”, which I think is incredibly accurate!  It’s a dark brown with a purple undertone and I truly adore the way it looks!  It’s definitely a vampy shade that might be out a lot of people’s comfort zones, but it’s stunning.  I think that because I have light skin with a neutral undertone, the dark color with purple tones really flatters me.

Packaging: In the same vein of Ashton, the packaging is very sleek and beautiful!  The clear tube fits nicely with the chrome cap and black “A” emblem.  Obviously the one I have is a sample size that I purchased in a kit last year, but the packaging is exactly the same as the full size, just smaller.

New at Ulta | February 16 – March 2, 2019

Hello friends!

Today I thought it would be fun to share some new products from Ulta that have caught my eye in the past few weeks!  I can’t share everything because I swear they come out with new products every day, but I have been taking a look at their new arrivals and seeing what I would consider buying.  I can’t afford everything on this list (that would be quite a bit!), but since they’ve intrigued me, I’m hoping that they’ll be interesting to you too!

This is something I want to start doing every few weeks, because there are so many new beauty releases now that it’s hard to keep up!  Hopefully this helps you all with seeing some new stuff to check out.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick “Ashton” | Review

Hello friends!

One brand that comes to mind as the pioneer of the matte liquid lipstick trend is Anastasia Beverly Hills! Way back in the day when liquid lipsticks were just becoming a thing, this was one of the original formulas you could find.  Today I wanted to share with you whether I feel like they’ve stood the test of time, or have fallen flat compared to other formulas!

Anastasia Beverly Hills liquid lipstick "Ashton" Review - A Midwest Belle

Color: Ashton is described as a “midtone yellow-brown”.  While I find this color really pretty, if you don’t love browns you probably want to skip on this and go for a different color instead.  The yellow undertone might be something that doesn’t work well with other skin tones, so this is definitely a color I’d suggest swatching first!

Packaging: I love how sleek the packaging looks!  The silver tube has ABH’s symbol on the top in black, so it matches the tube and makes it easy to identify among other liquid lipsticks.  I also really enjoy the gold detailing on the top of the tube as well!

NYX Lip Lingerie “Satin Ribbon” | Review

Hello friends!

When I went into this review, I thought for sure that I wouldn’t love this color and that I would pass it on afterwards because most of the time these shades don’t look good on me, but I was pleasantly surprised!  Because I have such pigmented lips, I’ve always found that pale colors look extremely patchy and weird on my lips, and I’ve always gotten rid of them.  However, I think I’ve found a winner!

Color: Satin Ribbon is an incredibly pale peach nude color that is probably the lightest lip color I own. This is definitely not a color for everyone, because it’s so peachy and pale and could potentially give the look of concealer lips.

Applicator: The applicator is very long compared to most standard liquid lipsticks, as you can see.  This holds enough product to cover both my bottom and top lips with just one side, which is saying a lot!  I’ve found that with most other liquid lipsticks, I have to either dip again or flip sides.  However, since there’s no point at the end of the applicator it’s hard to get a fine line. I personally didn’t have any issue getting a nice application, but it might be difficult for others.

Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip Color “Devotion” | Review

Hi friends!

Today I wanted to let you all know my thoughts on the other Revlon Matte Lip Color I own!  In an effort to see if maybe the formula was inconsistent between colors, I wanted to share my experience with another shade.  You can see the original review for Obsession here.

Color: Devotion is a nude pink with slightly yellow undertones.  It’s a color that I think also looks very flattering on me.  However, once again the formula disappointed me.

Applicator: The triangular shaped applicator is definitely one of my favorites, and it made applying easy and quick.  There’s enough product on both sides to get my entire lips without having to dip the wand in for more product.
